The Sacrament of Matrimony is established to bless the union of and accompany spouses on their journey together as reflected in Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:5-6; Mark 10:7-9, and Ephesians 5:31. In the Catechism of the Catholic Church we read: ' The Sacrament of Matrimony signifies the union of Christ and the Church. It gives spouses the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ has loved his Church; the grace of the sacrament thus perfects the human love of the spouses, strengthens their indissoluble unity, and sanctifies them on the way to eternal life'.
